Why I chose HORN: “I applied to HORN because I really enjoy the varied work in the metalworking field, everyone on the team is super nice, and the short commute of just 5 minutes is perfect for me.”

My daily work routine: “My workday starts at 6 a.m., when the foreman assigns me tasks. I either work on independent projects or assist a skilled worker. I organize my workspace and gather the necessary materials and tools on my own, and I make sure everything is neat and clean. If problems arise, I find solutions or ask a skilled worker for advice. My colleagues are all very nice and are always willing to help. Occasionally, I participate in internal or external training sessions to improve my skills.”

What I really like: “I’m currently in my second year of apprenticeship, and right now I enjoy welding stainless steel tanks the most. I also think our apprentice outings are really cool. The company always comes up with some really unique ideas for them.”

My vision for the future: “The decision to do my apprenticeship here was definitely the right one. I’m already looking forward to successfully completing my final apprenticeship exam, and I’m even considering going on to master craftsman school.”

Daniel T.
Second-year mechanical engineering technician apprentice

From technical school to an apprenticeship at HORN

Why I chose HORN: “I applied to HORN because I’ve always wanted to work with metal, and I really enjoyed my time here during the open house days. Plus, many of my friends work here, and they’ve only had good things to say. The work in custom manufacturing is always exciting and varied.”

My daily work routine: “My daily work routine as a machining apprentice is very varied, since I’m constantly given new workpieces to machine. My main tasks include the precise setup of the lathe, including proper workpiece clamping and tool selection. During the actual machining process, regularly checking the dimensions and surface finish is of great importance. Occasionally, a tool change is also required. In addition, I am responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the machines, my workstation, and the (apprentice) workshop.”

What I particularly like: “In my second year of apprenticeship, I’m already able to turn difficult parts and help out the first-year apprentices. I really appreciate my work schedule because I have plenty of free time in the afternoons. I also really value how straightforward vacation planning is here—whether there’s an important appointment or, like some of my colleagues, I need to take care of something on my family farm.”

My vision for the future: “My current goal for the future is to work on other (larger) machines and successfully complete my final apprenticeship exam. I’m not worried about passing the exam, because I know the company always prepares its apprentices very well.”

Gernot G.
Second-year machining technician apprentice

From agricultural school to an apprenticeship at HORN

Why I chose HORN:

“I applied to HORN because of its proximity to where I live and the prospect of a varied job. That was also why I decided to pursue a second apprenticeship after becoming an electrical engineer. My first apprenticeship was too specialized to land an interesting job in my hometown. Through my apprenticeship as a machining technician, I’ve not only gained thorough practical training but also understand the theoretical context and background.”

My daily work routine:

“My daily work involves independently processing orders on various lathes, selecting tools, and, when necessary, troubleshooting issues. However, my colleagues and I regularly exchange ideas and support one another, so everyone benefits from each other’s knowledge. This approach also helped me find my footing and learn quickly during my apprenticeship.”

What I particularly like:

“Since I initially completed my apprenticeship at HORN through a foundation, I didn’t take it for granted that I would be hired directly after finishing my apprenticeship—even though I had hoped for it. I particularly appreciate the flat hierarchy and the positive interactions with colleagues and supervisors.”

My vision for the future:

“I want to continue building on what I’ve learned and gain additional experience working with various machine tools, which is why HORN is the perfect employer for me.”

Apprenticeships as the foundation for a successful future:

“My apprenticeship as a machinist gave me the foundation I need to successfully run a business. Inspired by the joy I find in my work, I went on to complete my evening HTL program. Practical experience and theory have thus been with me my whole life. That’s what I hope for our apprentices as well. A solid foundation on which they can build their lives. And not to mention: a profession they can practice with joy every day.”Ing.
